Scoring paper

Hi All-

I'm new to all this but interested in being able to precisely score shapes to facilitate sharp, accurate folding. Will a die cutting machine do this? Has anyone actually done it and is there any advice/thoughts they might have to offer?

Thanks,
David

You might try the embossing tip. BTW, you'll also need an embossing mat. Let us know how you make out as I've never attempted this myself!

You can also just use the cutting blade (which is what I do most of the time because I don't want to change blades any more often than I have to!)

Through the SCAL software, I just select the fold lines and change the line to a dash, but those lines on a separate layer (sounds complicated but it isn't) and reduce the force so it is just barely "cutting" the score lines. It works beautifully. Just be sure to use WYSIWYG so they scoring lines stay in the same place. You would do the scoring lines first and then cut the outline. I have used this method many times.

As mentioned, you can also use the embossing tool. You can also use the engraving tool and just lower the speed. Lots of options.

Yes you can do it, I don't use a dashed line, just the normal cutting line and blade. As a very rough guide scoring pressure is 10% of cutting pressure.

Wow! Three quick replies and all actually helpful! Thank you. This is a much better response than I get on most forums. :)

Once I have my machine I'll check back here and let you know how it works out.

Thanks again,
David

One thing I would ask is what type of material are you planning to "score"?
