Double Cuts from Vector in AI to SCAL

Double Cuts from Vector in AI to SCAL

Postby Artisan12 » October 24th, 2014, 4:41 pm

Hi There-

I created a vector pattern in illustrator and saved it as a SVG file for SCAL3. I am cutting vinyl and my 24" Silver Bullet is cutting the image twice, almost as if it is "Lining" the image and cutting the inside of the line and the outside of the line- therefore my 2 lines!

When I cut from SCAL V3, "Multi Cut" is in the Off mode. I have checked the nodes in illustrator and they are fine, I have no duplicate images, nothing hiding etc.,

What am I missing???

I am attaching the illustrator file and the svg file. Any help is greatly appreciated! BTW, I struggle with AI as well as the SB and SCAL so the more detail I get the better off I am. So excited about my SB!! I am determined to conquer it! Learning curves are frustrating though!

Thanks!!!!
Brooke

Make Sure you are you don't have both fill and outline selected. That would cause it to cut two lines.

I just imported the svg into SCAL and it came in with only the fill, made it smaller and test cut it and it only cut once.

You might want to check your settings to be sure. Also double checked and there are no hidden duplicates underneath but broke apart to be sure.

Worked beautifully for me.......

Are you importing the svg into SCAL?

Where do you find fill and outline?

What should I look for in the settings? Also, I checked in illustrator that there is not another layer.

Stroke and fill are on the right hand side of the screen under appearance. I am pretty sure with SCAL that it doesn't matter if you have stroke and fill selected - it still just cuts once. But with this file you have no stroke - just fill.

When you click on the scissors to cut you get a pop up screen. The multi cut should be set to off if you only want it to cut once.

Fill and Stroke.PNG
Sorry Not fill and out Line it is fill and stroke, make sure there is a red line thru one of them before you send to Scal to cut, if both are open or have color in them. That makes it think there are two lines. It is on the side tool bar in AI. The bottom square is the stroke, the top box is the fill box the red line means there is no fill.

It is only coming into SCAL with the fill - no stroke is showing and it cut fine for me, so not sure yet why she is getting the multicut but think it must be the multi cut.

Thanks Suzan for explaining where the fill and stroke are in AI - one of a few programs NOT installed on my computer! :hide:

The next suggestion in AI would be to view in outline and make sure there isn't another set of lines there. If you like you can send me the file, and I can look and see what happens with me.

Everyone, thanks so much for your help!!!! I actually saved it as an SVG in illustrator, imported it into SCAL. I did an object >> Break Apart>> selected the white background area and deleted it. Made sure my Fill was black and my stroke was nothing in SCAL. This seemed to work. I still want to play with what Susan suggested in the stroke and fill parts of illustrator. (Who is not my Friend!!!) Susan can you just SVG an "Outlined" form inport into SCAL? I'll have to try but right now I am a liitle burned out of my Little Silver Beauty!

Again, Thank You all for your suggestions.

I have to say I am confused by what you said you did. I imported your svg file that was posted (since I don't have illustrator so can't open the AI file) and it came in fine. There was no white background, just the bounding box.

When you break apart, it creates a layer, but if you close the layer of the design, there is nothing else there. I am confused since it imported just fine for me...

Glad you have it working...... and yes there is a learning curve but you will tackle it one step at a time!

Artisan12, yes you can do either a stroke or a fill. The stroke would give it just the outline around it. I usually do it that way to trace or make something then look at it with a fill to see what it would look like finished. Also if you look at my above picture that little curved double ended arrow, if you click that it will show you design in filled or stroke mode. It is always important thought to make sure one of the boxes is white with the red line thru it. I will experiment with something to see if I can recreate what you have going on.

Thanks Suzan for your help with Illustrator!

I have a question for you. Would it be easier for her to install the download that allows you to just send to SCAL from Illustrator rather than export/save as an svg and then import into SCAL? Would that make a difference at all? I have no clue since I don't use it - just wondering.....

Thank you!

It could, because you are importing into a whole different program. I personally would rather save and open SCAL and then cut. Sometimes I have found between all the softwares it doesn't always move over the same way as what you designed in. Right now though. The kids are on their way up here. We got a huge surprise on Tuesday. We are all going to Vegas and the kids are getting married on November 6th their 3rd anniversary, and everything important has always happened on the sixth. It will just be 6 of us going. The parents and kids. But have a ton to do before we go. We are thrilled, and then in April, they are going to have a huge reception and re do their vows, including his 7 year old son. So I am running all over the place but look at it later tonite and see what I come up with.
