Converting Silhouette files to SVG

Converting Silhouette files to SVG

Postby Deb Za » January 26th, 2014, 10:07 pm

I thought I had read somewhere that you were able to convert these--and I sure hope there is. GinaK Designs offers Silhouette cut files for their stamp images, but they are in Silhouette format--I believe this to be GSD. So how can I convert that to SVG?

I have Inkscape. I have SCAL Pro.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

you can "save as" an svg file, IF your sil studio is the designer edition AND IF your sil studio is version 1.9 or 2.0
you MUST have designer edition AND v1.9 or v2.0...

p.s. it will be important to find out for sure if the file format is .gsd or .studio...
IF they are gsd, and if they will open in robomaster, there is another conversion method too! :)
BUT if they are .studio or a gsd that opens only in sil studio, then you are back to needing the designer edition v1.9 or v2.0

the curiosity was killing me lol...
I just went to Gina's site, and her cut files are .studio format...
so to get them to svg, you would need the designer edition of sil studio, v1.9 or v2.0.

IF you don't have the Designer Edition AND/OR it's NOT ver. 1.9 or 2.0 on a PC (Mac version didn't work) then you are not completely out of luck. You can still open them in the Silhouette Program and fill with black and do a "screen capture" and then trace as another option.

I convert the .studio files to svg all the time. I have the old SIlhouette software from when I purchased my SD and Cameo and then I bought the Designer Edition and it allows me to svae the fiels as .svg's.

If they are GSD rather than Sil you can open them directly in MTC now. If they are the newer Sil you have to have a pc and version 1.9 or 2.0 of the DE software. Then you simply open the file in DE, choose save as and title it. Ex. flower.SVG it will show it as a sil file, but if you type it in .SVG it will actually save as an svg and be openable in MTC or SCAL.

Thanks for all the input! I'm working on a few ideas--mainly the screen capture one--but haven't had time to play with it the last couple days. But that seems to be the best way for me to do it.

I have written a document from information I rec'd. from 2 ladies from another website on how to convert sil to svg You don't need any other software and it isn't hard to do. After writing it I gave it to a friend to make sure it worked, it did. If you are interested in having it, I'd be happy to email or post it somewhere for you.

1. Open Silhouette Studio and design of choice
2. Go to accessories in windows and choose the Snipping Tool, a box will come up and tell you to put a box around what you want to copy, then save it as a png. (Make sure you know where you are saving it, LOL)
Open SCAL to a new page, go to the trace function, open the file there from your computer, the preview box will open, then trace it and then hit save as svg and choose where you want to save it.
If you have a background with your design then you need to do the following:
Open SCAL and then open the svg you just saved... after opening, hit select all and ungroup. Then just pull at the image with your cursor until you get a cut file without all the stuff in the background.... could be a couple of layers... just delete the ones you don't need
Don't ungroup unless the background is not transparent, it's really
the only way you can get rid of it.
