Mat too sticky??? Double cutting?

Mat too sticky??? Double cutting?

Postby Choi to the World » October 21st, 2012, 5:32 am

So I have just cut my first-ever file on my first-ever cutting machine, the Silver Bullet! My little test rectangle was cut from card stock, I lowered the pressure a bit to cut a copy weight paper. Naturally I set up and chose a complex file to make my maiden cut with. So I have two questions.

#1 The card stock I used for my test triangle pulled apart a bit when I removed it from the mat, by that I mean that a little bit of of the paper peeled off and stuck to the mat. There is actually a dot pattern on the back where the adhesive actually pulled at the fibers of the paper. Also the paper is quite curled upon removal. An expert remedies? I am thinking about rubbing and removing paper from the mat a couple times to reduce the robust-ness of the sticky a bit. Thoughts?

#2 So then the more complex file: I used copy-weight paper to cut a file of many curved strips of paper. All the pieces when peeled off are really curled. (Maybe I should put my hair on the mat and pull it off, I could use a bit of curl ;) ) Also, the cutter double cut the file, almost as if it was cutting around the weight of the line, so I removed my strips and I have the finest out line of each strip left on the mat, make sense?

Oh my, as I write this I wonder if I have thought of the problem. Do objects have to be filled in SCAL so it doesn't read the line as a object and cut around it? I will investigate. Any thoughts for both of my issues would be appreciated, I need help from the experts out there.

Thanks,
Karin

Karin, preparing your mat by putting on a piece of paper and pulling it off works great. As to the double cutting, my guess is that you have both a fill and a stroke layer on your file and it will cut twice in that case. welcome!!!

Scal should only cut once even if you do have both stroke and fill.

When you hit cut preview does it show the double cut? It so it's the file and you can delete on of the paths.

Well, I do believe it is cutting around, both sides of the lines. There is no fill on the object. I guess I'll have to play around. Thanks you Retta for the "too sticky" advice.

What software did you use to create your file where you were getting the double cuts?? That should be easy enough to fix, but need to know what software you are using.

I figured it out. There was the tiniest break in the line(I had to zoom to the highest power to even see it!), It traced the object in scal, so it created and object out of it. If that makes sense. So that is why it seemed to be cutting around the weight of the line. I am just glad I figured it out.

Karin, glad you found out what the problem was. I have gotten into the habit of zooming in and looking closely at my files to find things like that. It does take some time, but it saves on paper. Or cut it out on scrap paper (buying paper on clearance for next to nothing is great for practice cuts on new designs), so you can see if there are any issues before you use your "good" papers.
