Ready to purchase just one question

Postby jonesnaround » January 17th, 2012, 9:18 pm

Hi there everyone. I have just stumpled upon this forum and have not had a chance to read thru all the topics. My main reason for this purchase would be to cut chipboard, of course I will use it for tons of other things too but mainly chipboard. Can I please get any feed back on what results you have had. How thick will it cut would I be able to cut chipboard like the little chipboard albums you can buy in the dollar bin at michaels? Also the software that can be purchased seperatly will I need that too, I already have scal and plan on purchasing mtc tia.

I would send Dawn a sample of the chipboard you will be using. She is always willing to cut samples. Chipboard varies in density and the fiber in it also varies. And Scal and MTC are great programs. But if the files are going to be large files. You might want to test them in scal and mtc to make sure they aren't to big in file size to cut. I know Tyler had some issues when he was showing us some engraving he was doing. The file was so large it was too slow in MTC. So he switched over to Signcut which handled it fine. Now that was an older version of MTC they might have resolved that issue with the newer versions.

I cut chipboard all the time. I agree with Suzan, there are different kinds. I have made my own albums and designs. I use Inkscape v. 47 (free) and Signcut for my software. If a cutter can cut more - the Cougar is it! The service before and after is outstanding. Good luck with your decision.

The other replies say it all - chipboard varies enormously in its quality and density and the only way to be sure a particular make will cut well is to test cut it

Tyler of All That Jazz supplies chipboard in two weights that is pre-tested specifically for the Black Cat cutters. There is a handy tab at the top of the page that links directly to his store. The customer service provided by Tyler and his wife Nicki is terrific.

There are videos on Christy's Blog,http://everdaylittlethings.blogspot.com/ of the Cougar cutting some pretty heavy weight chipboard, and lots of other cool stuff.

I know it's not a new concept, but I cut up all of my cereal and cracker boxes and use them as chipboard. I make and image and a reverse image and then glue the printed sides together. It's a little time consuming, but that's what sitting in front of the TV is for! It only costs me the price glue and whatever I adorn the pieces with. You can see a few things on my blog posts:

I also do a LOT of subway art using a reverse stencil technique and vinyl. I was thrilled to see how specifically the Cougar cuts the vinyl and how easily it comes off with transfer tape. Peels like buttah!

I just started cutting chipboard but it cut the chipboard so easily. I got the .22 chipboard from Tyler. As everyone has said, there are different kinds so if you have a specific kind you want to cut, then it will need to be test cut, if one of us hasn't already cut it. Good luck on your decision....the Cougar is an awesome machine.

I cut 1.2mm chipboard but it is from Australia and it is grey and hard. I have 2 different brands that are both 1.2mm and only one cuts well. Finding the one you want that cuts well helps.
