Learning Inkscape

Learning Inkscape

Postby Tyler » June 17th, 2011, 10:20 am

Last night, we covered a few basics in the webinar dealing with inkscape, but I didn't feel it was very organized or adequately presented. With that in mind, here are a few places that you can go to learn inkscape. Of course we will have more webinars dealing with it, but for the time being, I hope these help! (I am using many of these too, right along with you all!)

1)http://screencasters.heathenx.org/ has some wonderful videos on how to use inkscape in general. There is a link called "microsodes" that have a lot of the basics in explaining the basic tools involved in inkscape and they seem very good. They are organized and don't seem to be too dry. On their main page, they have screencasts of how to apply the tools in projects. They are doing it for the general graphic artist, so not everything will apply to cutting (such as gradients). But there is a lot that will apply and the more you know about the program in general, the more powerful a tool it will become for you.

2) There are tutorials on both the main Black Cat Forum and Sherri's http://thatsscrapinc.com store that links to http://learndigitaldesign.com/index.php, which has some more videos.

3) Bryan did a webinar on MTC a year ago, also explaining the tools (that is where I got the link for screencasters.heathenx.org).

4) Inkscape has their own user written interactive tutorials that can be accessed by going to Help>Tutorials from within inkscape.

5) There will be more inkscape in webinars here in the future!

I hope that helps get some people started!

Another cool thing that I found is you can adjust the size of your icons. Inkscape icons are a little too small for my own taste so I set them to large.

You can also calibrate your screen size. That way, when you click zoom 1:1, the image shown is its actual size. Awesome for previewing how big an image will be!

Thanks Penny, I tend to want to learn from someone that uses the software the way I would use it, rather than the developers. With AI, Linda.com is really great but goes so much farther with stuff I have no need to know. Thanks for the contribution.

Ditto what Suzan says!! It is VERY easy and not intimidating to learn from you. I plan to spend part of the weekend catching up on your tutorials and overcoming some "fears"!! :hide: :ROFLMBO:

Thanks Penny, I will have to check them out... like Suzan said, I like to learn from someone that uses the software in the same way I need to use it.. Then, if I want to learn more.. I can always find other tutorials. One of the problems I have had finding tutorials for Inkscape or AI, is that they tend to lean more toward graphic arts... and I don't want to learn how to do that.. I just want to learn how to get my image to a point that I can make a cut file with it.

If I weren't so tired now, I would start watching them now.. but it's late and I'm going to have a busy day tomorrow.. so will check them out tomorrow night for sure!!!
