Cutting Balsa for model planes ...???

Postby mrfibble » July 3rd, 2014, 11:05 am

hello there

Does anyone with a silver bullet use their machine for this and if so how are the results whats the thickest balsa you can use etc etc

I am looking for something to do this but cant afford a laser cutter so was wondering if the SB is a viable option

cheers

The Silver Bullet can cut Balsa, the maximum thickness would be 2mm and would need the 60plus blade

thyme Do you have to cover the wood with tape or anything to keep it from splintering? And can my cougar do that too? I have never tried it and would love too! I cut this out for my son by hand and he said he would LOVE it in wood! I'll get right on that! Hahaha!

No tape or anything like that. I just use a slower speed, about 50, and a new blade. It will split if you try to make cuts too close together though.
Love your design!

thyme Thank you! Well, darn it! I can always contact someone to do it for us but just thought...why not do it in balsa! Oh well, no worries! My son is asking his girlfriend of 4 years to marry him, so we are decorating his back yard with lights and poms and the heart! He thought they might want to have a metal or wood cutting of the file that they could keep and hang somewhere. It never hurts to ask!
