New and a modeler (Railroad, others)

Postby clayalley » January 31st, 2012, 7:33 pm

Hi everyone, I am a new person here and am thinking of purchasing a cougar for making house kits. I understand there are some railroad modelers who might be here who can best advise me on which machine is the best as well as what materials can be cut. Currently, I am thinking Taskboard. Anyone cut this with the Blackcat? Any and all advice is totally appreciated.

Hi and thank you for the reply. Do you happen to know what size the windows are? Since I am totally inexperienced with the cougar, I have no idea of what its capabilities are. How small can you cut? Again, any info is appreciated.

Hello and welcome, Karen!

The Black Cats can cut really fine detail. Rachell made a 3 dimensional baby shoe smaller than a dime!

Hi & welcome Karen, great to see another miniaturist ? onboard.
One of my plans for getting the Cougar was to cut house kits (1:48) — but 10mths later still haven't done anything!
I've never heard of taskboard so will have to Google it.

Thanks for the link :)
This looks like it could be perfect for mini building construction, especially since it can be shaped. Going to investigate further.

This looks like great stuff to try and cut. I am going to have to search some down. I see really fun projects if it works.

Sure, be happy to send out some samples of the taskboard. Did any of you see the video on how to use it? Totally cool stuff. Lots of potential. Email me your name and address and I will get some out to you.

There is a place supposedly really close to me. If I can get some Whizzy will send you some pieces to play with.

Hey Karen. I found some of the 1/16th inch and the 1/32nd inch thickness and bought it on Friday. Haven't had a chance to try anything with it yet however. They did have the 1/8th inch but I didn't buy any of it for two reasons. First, I thought it was pretty thick and it appears to be fairly dense and fiberous so wasn't sure about trying to cut it on my Cougar. I would suggest that you send Sherri a sample of that thickness and get her expert opinion on trying to cut that particular thickness. Plus, they only had fairly large pieces and that thickness was about $10.00 versus less than $4 for the other two. The other two sizes I think might be okay to work with. I will try them out in the next few days and report back.

Hey Karen. I will also email you. Sorry for my delay. Those children and their acitivites kept getting in my way! :banghead: :D

Anyway, I just got a chance to try to cut the thinner sheets I did buy and I didn't have much success. :( Even the thinner sheets is pretty "fiberous" and was "shedding". BUT that said - I'm still more a "newbie" then an expert with my Cougar! So, my suggestion is for you to contact Sherri and send her some samples of the thicknesses you are interested in and see what she says. She may be able to do a better job then me. One thing might be to put some painter's tape or something like that over the top of it to help.

If you don't have any samples to send Sherri let me know and I can try to send her some of what I have. Would love to figure out a way to make this work in our Cougars! ;)
