A big THANK YOU to our veterans and Happy 11/11/11 today!

I would like to take a moment to thank all of our veterans, those currently serving, and all their families.

You are so willing to sacrifice so much to defend our Country and our freedoms. May God bless and be with you all.

I so agree Iggy. Our military doesn't receive the recognition it should. Thank you to all the past present, and even those in the future that serve our country bravely so we might have freedom.

I'm a little late getting on here, but I echo all those thanks to our veterans and all our military. It's never too late to thank them though. My thanks to the UK and Canadian soldiers also. May God bless them all.

I would like to thank all our veterans and those serving in all of our Countries. Australia just stops everywhere at 11.00AM on the 11/11 and has done my whole life in remembrance. We also stop every night at every Ex Servicemen's club for that minute at 6.00PM and every town has one.
I worked in one for 2 years when I was younger and some of these clubs choose 9.00PM instead of 6.00PM to turn out the lights and face the memorial that never goes out standing in silence until the ode is finished. I know it off by heart and I love it. Everyone speaks the last line. Our Ode was written by an Englishman named Lawrence Binyon and published in 1914. To this day it still gets to me when I hear it and remember.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Kate, I applaud the Australian soldiers too, didn't mean to leave them out of my post. We have so many soldiers fighting for our freedom. That is a nice tribute that you do down there.

Phyllis and Iggy,
I never took that as being left out. I didn't even think of it. I just thought you might like to know how we did it here. That we not only have a minutes silence at 11.00AM on the 11/11 each year which is our remembrance day. That at all RSL clubs every night this tradition continues. You should see how we commemorate ANZAC day. We love our ANZAC's. We have a march of all veterans in every big city Australia wide or a family member march's for those lost or have since left us. Starting with a dawn service at a war memorial followed by a breakfast. Many travel to Gallipoli for the Dawn service where we lost so many. Now of course we add the ones from Vietnam and our guys in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I used to wish that one day there would be no one left to march for. That won't happen in my lifetime, sadly.
