Windows 7 - grrrh - it's a pita!!!

For want of a better title :)

In the past few days Windows 7 Explorer has suddenly stopped displaying image thumbnails (e.g. jpgs, pngs, psds etc)
I have checked all the obvious:-
1. in folder options > always show icons, never thumbnails (unchecked)
2. deleted & rebuilt the thumbnail cache
3. used Bing, Google, Yahoo & stupid Microsoft to look for possible answers
4. run a malwares scan (system is clean)
5. done a restore (Microsoft & Adobe updates)
6. selected medium icons to view . . .

Also, another observation — using Windows Photo Viewer (the default) the preview pane no longer works — if I d/click on an image it opens in a new window.

"My Pictures" on C drive is not affected, only folders on other drives.

Hi Whizzy, sorry about the problems. Not sure if this will help but, on your internet explorer menu bar (above), you will see a tools. Click on tools and go to F12 developer tools, another window will pop open. On the "new" window under file you click on customize internet explorer view source. Mine is set as default viewer, if yours is not checked that "might" be the problem. Hope this helps! =-)

I don't use IE apart from having it installed for Microsoft updates, but I did a quick check & my settings are set to default, same as yours Mendy. I'm not having any problems browsing the internet, it's just desktop related & weird that it's suddenly happened. Yesterday I could view pngs & gifs but today they're only showing as icons too! I'm hoping to avoid reformatting if I can!

I am so sorry,Whizzy and wish I had some answers for you. I have had Windows 7 for quite a while with no problems.

Have you cleared out your cache and done all of the normal things that can cause things to go crazy?

Have you installed any new programs or updates? If it's just a recent happening I would definitely try a system restore before reformatting - but I am going to cross my fingers that you are able to resolve the problem easily.

Good luck.

Whizzy - I wonder if the association with that type of file changed accidently. Maybe you already checked that?

Have you checked to see if microsoft did an upgrade recently..that could have done it! I know you could then go back and do a restore to before the add on? Just a thought.....every time something like this happens to me kit is a microsoft update.

Well, moving right along . . .
After doing heaps of research & achieving nothing I did a custom re-install of Windows 7 & have spent the past couple of days testing & reloading only necessary software, housekeeping etc — only to have the whole lot go belly up again today! grrhhh!
Topping it all off, Signcut came up with Execution of command error '"C:\Program Files\SignCut\plugins.exe" *' failed (error 740: the requested operation requires elevation.) Incompatible Application

Not happy!

Try re-installing Signcut over the top of itself
