If your courts are like ours that can drag on for a couple of years. It must take them a long time to think and they went to school a long time to learn to think that slow. Scary huh?
We have one in our family, no three that dragged on for over 5 years, all workplace injuries where the employer was at fault and breaking the law. Two settled too cheap because it was sending them insane. The other ones offer went from $30,000.00 to his last offer of $320,00.00 he was advised not to take it and go to court. He was awarded $30,000.00 by the court. That didn't pay his costs. He got the wrong Magistrate on the wrong day and it didn't matter he had all of the evidence needed. All of these were young men who could no longer do the job they were trained for. One can't work anymore. Once that month is up they come up with another counter offer and the month starts again.
Don't let Valerie go there. If she gets a decent offer which she hasn't yet then tell her to take it. I think she went in too cheap to start because her injury could be lifelong. If that happens here when you are young they they should pay you what you could have earned for your working lifetime. I wish her lots of luck for a quick settlement and a good one and you should be do proud of her, I now you are. Still in my prayers.
