SCAL4 : Design Size vs Cut Size

I did up a design, 20cm x 23cm, meant to be die-cut.
The mat-size was set for 29.7cm x 42cm (portrait).
In SCAL4, the design was placed in the center of the mat, and sized correctly.
Cut mode was "Origin Point".
The resulting cut was 8cm x 9cm.

I also used one of the propeller shapes from the library.
I sized it to 15cm x 15cm.
It came out 5.7cm x 5.7cm.

Can anyone guide me where I went wrong please?
Thank you!

Under Edit> Preferences - where do you have the SVG DPI set? If you have it set to Illustrator, that could be altering the size. Not sure I have heard of anyone having that much of a variance. Have you contacted Jo since you are in Australia to see if she can shed any light on this?

Will keep thinking about what else it could be. Was initially wondering if it had to do with the program you were designing in, but since also used an image from the SCAL library, that eliminates that.

Are you using a PC or a MAC? Have you cut anything else without a problem or is this the first thing?

Hi Gigi,
sorry for the late reply.
The company I was working for has decided to stop business, but they were kind enough to give me their Silver Bullet.

I'm still having problems with the Design Size vs Cut Size.
Inside SCAL4, I placed one line of text. It measures 181mm wide.
The resulting cut is 70mm wide.
I've attached the settings as well as the actual cut.

Any thoughts where I may have gone wrong?

Hi there, I think I may have solved the mystery.
SCAL4 may be using different units of measurements.

When I designed my text to be 180mm wide, SCAL4 divides it by 2.54 (inch to mm) when it cuts.
180mm (design) / 2.54 = 70.8mm (actual cut).

Therefore, working backwards, if I want the final size to be 180mm, I will have to...
180mm (what I want) x 2.54mm = 457.2mm (design)

I only see this problem with "Cut line type = CUT".
No problems with Print+Cut.

Btw, I'm running SCAL4 (ver 4.044) on Windows 8.

Is there anyone I can send this to for a fix please ?

Hi, since you think this is an issue with the SCAL software, you need to contact their software support. You can find that information here on the Craftedge (developer of SCAL) website:

Melanie, thank you very much for your help.
CraftEdge were very prompt in their replies. Brilliant!

The problem was...
The X- and Y-resolution values (In the Cut window, Settings button) were both wrong.
They're supposed to be 1.0 inches.
