SCAL Pro and Corel Draw question

SCAL Pro and Corel Draw question

Postby Gigi » November 27th, 2012, 1:51 pm

Just wondering if anyone has tried out the new Corel Draw plug in that Brandon has for SCAL Pro. It says you can send straight to SCAL from Corel Draw as long as you are using a version 3 or later. I have both 4 and 5, have tried both, and neither gives SCAL as an option. I installed the plug in and rebooted. Has anyone had success? Thought I would ask before I bothered Brandon with a question. Any info welcome AND appreciated!

Still using SCAL no problem, just love options!! :)

I don't know how Corel works, but in illustrator it isn't a plug in it is actually a script, and for me it is under file and says scripts. Just thought I would throw that in, in case Corel and adobe have anything in common.

Suzan -

He called it a plug in and said, if I recall right, that it would send to SCAL which is what you do when you are designing in Corel - you send to SignCut for instance. It just isnt listed as an option anywhere but maybe I missed something.......

Oh I know that Gigi, But the scal one is under an extension that is called scripts. Don't know why it may be an illustrator thing. Thought it just might be hiding there in Corel. Like a gremlin

Can I export my files from Corel to SCAL 3 or do I have to have SCAL Pro? I had a trial version of Corel and really liked it but I don't want to purchase Corel if I can't send my files to SCAL 3. Anyone know the answer?

Yes you can. Download the plugin on the craftedge (scal) website and you can design un Corel and send to cut in scal.

I think if you go to File>Export, it should give you the option to send to SCAL... not at my computer right now, so can't check.. but I think that is how you do it.

I got it to work. My file was just text. I had to export as an SVG and that wouldn't work at first but I had to change the option to export as text to export as curves and then I was able to import into SCAL. I haven't tried to cut yet but it seems like it should be fine. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Am nor near a computer fir a few days so cannot access the program, but as i recall, there is an application box on the top bar abt in the middle. If you click on ur, there is an option to send to Scal which cab be a little easier than file - export. Again, relying on memory so could be a little off.

Another option instead of Corel Draw, is to use Inkscape, which is a free program. There are extensions you can download to export into SCAL from Inkscape as well. I have those installed on my computer, but I really don't use them, mostly because I create my designs on my desktop, but my cutter is hooked up to my laptop... so I always save my file, then open it in SCAL on my laptop.

Diane - this is interesting, because I was considering moving my cutter from its current place, which is on my desk, to some spot elsewhere, to better be able to cut large media. Currently, in order to cut large media, I have to turn the cutter 90 degrees to the side, so that I have "air space" for the mat to travel (normal position is against a wall) How do you transfer the files once you have saved them on the main computer, to get them on the laptop computer hooked up to the cutter?

I have the 18" cutter, so I can't use the rolling stand. I often wished that there was some adapter that could take the 24" stand and make it compatible with my 18" cutter. That would solve alot of my problems......(hint here sherri, hint, hint)........

The other thing I was considering was to figure out another spot in the general vicinity of my main computer and just have a really long USB cord......

Thanks in advance for your tips.....

Gigi - I tried what you said, there is an option to send to SCAL but I keep getting an error message saying "failed to get active document in CorelDraw and nothing happens, it looks like its sending but it just keeps going and going and never does anything.

Pat I just bought a heavy duty utility cart it is three shelves. It works great. It is deep enough that I can leave a roll of vinyl behind it while cutting. Will post a picture a little later.

Angel, I will look into Inkscape. Corel is so expensive, I only bought a one month subscription because to buy the program is almost $400!

You can get an education version if you have a student or faculty id card, or if you have a child that has one. It is under a hundred than and it is the full working version.
