Single line dash for score line in Inkscape

Single line dash for score line in Inkscape

Postby Angel135612 » August 4th, 2013, 12:33 pm

I have been trying to figure this out for some time, and thought it time to ask a question. Is there any way in Inkscape to create a dashed line for scoring, but have it as a single line? Every time I create my dashed line, and convert either Object or Path, I get small rectangles, I would like to have just a single line instead. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this (I thought I had done it before, but it was so long ago, that I don't remember and it could have been small rectangles then instead of a single line).

What I am trying to do, is create my own box file, and I want to add dashed lines for scoring like SVGCuts has in their files. Short of selecting one of their dashed lines and copying and pasting in my file, I can't for the life of me figure this out. Will Inkscape do this? Will another program, either CorelDraw, Illustrator, or even SCAL create dashed lines with just a single line?

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Diane, I know you can in SCAL. You just select the line you would like as a dashed line, change the line type and it will do the single dashes. I'm thinking Tyler went over the steps for this in the last hangout.

Thank you Lisa, I haven't watched the last hangout yet. Will see if I can figure it out there.

I will try to do a screen cap of where it is in SCAL when I can get to my PC (it won't be until late this evening or tonight) if you need me to. JLMK someone else may get to it before I can, when they jump on here. LOL

In Inkscape draw your line.
Use Fill and Stroke/Stroke style to set your dashes.
Then Extensions/Modify Path/Convert to dashes.
That will make it a true dashed line rather than a series of rectangles.

Make sure you do not at any point use Convert stroke to Path

Gigi In SCAL I did use the line style and changed it to a dash, but it didn't make it a true dashed line. It just "looked" like a dashed line. If I clicked on it with the node editing tool, it was just one long line with one node at either end, but that wouldn't cut a dashed line. Is there another step that I'm missing to create a true dashed line, and not just have it look like a dashed line??

@Thyme THANK YOU. I knew it was something simple, and I had done it before, but for the life of me I couldn't remember. Going to make a note of it this time so I won't forget it the next time I need it. That is exactly what I was wanting to do, and that made it so much easier than what I was trying to do.

Diane -

Not sure what you are trying to do. Do you want the dashes longer? If so you click on the edit button and change the length of the dash and the gap in between. Is that what you mean? You can easily alter it that way - not through the node edit tool in SCAL. And even when I click on node edit I still see the dashes - maybe that is because I have edited the dashed with the line edit tool as pictured in the box.

If we are talking about two different things, I apologize for confusing the situation!

Diane, it does only have the nodes at either end, but it cuts as a dashed line.

Ahhhh I didn't know that Lisa, I haven't tried cutting it from SCAL, I guess I need to do some testing. However, what Dawn said to do in Inkscape, is what I remember doing awhile back, and couldn't recall.
I still have a lot to learn about SCAL, and I appreciate all the help.
