Trying to do a fill on a font in Inkscape

Trying to do a fill on a font in Inkscape

Postby kim » August 1st, 2012, 8:27 pm

I am in over my head. I want to take a text "welcome" and do the eggbot thing (fill) and then import into SCAL. Is there an easy explanation of what to do? What I am trying is not working. FIrst of all, I am not good at Inkscape, even the basics get my flustered, and am new to SCAL. So double whammy here. I did get my outline to do in SCAL...that was easy enough. But really want the "Welcome" to be filled in. This is an engraving project.

Did you save your file from Inkscape after you did the fill as an SVG and import it into SCAL??

I did but the fill didn't take. I typed the text in Inkscape. Did a path to object or something like that. Did the eggbot, but messages kept popping up. Saved as an svg but the only thing that imported into SCAL was the outline of the text.

Ok.....this is what I do......type the font......do Path > Object to Path....then I do Object > Ungroup....with them all selected then I do Path > Union......I've found doing this helps keep down the stray lines......

Then once I have done those steps...I'll make a copy of the item.....then with one of them selected I do Extenstions > Eggbot Contributed > Hatch Fill....then select how I want it to fill...I do 45, cross hatch with the spacing at 1...Tyler goes smaller.....then click apply.......it will take a few minutes for it to process.....then I close the box once it's complete...and the align the other copy over the filled file that way it gives a nice finished edge around the item......Hope that makes sense...

I had a little time before I have to run out the door for some appointments and gave it a try. It Worked!!! It Worked!!! It Worked!!! Thank you so much Penny for helping. I don't really know what I did wrong, but mine just wasn't doing. But I love this. Now when I get back home, I can start engraving.

I like the idea of putting another "frame" around the engraving, I will have to remember this the next time I try some. My package of metal from Tyler at AllThatJazzSupplies.com was in Denver last night, so I SHOULD get it today.. if not it will be tomorrow for sure. But I do have some from there already that I could play with. I just don't know what I want to engrave... LOL

Of course I over slept and have just glanced at all this. Ladies don't make the silly mistake I did. Make sure the hatchfill is installed. Yes I did that.
