Attached file- Need help with creating first SVG file.

I thought I would try to create my first SVG file. It looks great and works if I just want to out out the shape and add to a card or something. What I want though is to make a box and have the detail showing after it is cut out. I don't know how to set it up correctly to cut out the image so the detail stays and the entire image does not cut out. Is there a tutorial somewhere to teach me? I have looked and haven't found one yet.
I have attached a image so you can see what the box looks like.
