Two new DIY papercutting projects

Two new DIY papercutting projects

Postby d0m0nik » March 18th, 2013, 11:43 am

I have now finished two more DIY papercutting projects for die cutting and put them on Etsy. They are both almost perfect versions of my hand cut art work, Daisies and Japanese Sky
The projects come with a background image which you print out. You are then provided with MTC, SCAL and SVG files for cutting out the background colours. You stick these directly onto the printed background image. Finaly using the SCAL file you can cut out the main papecutting. This is mounted over the background to produce the finshed image.
I usualy frame them, these projects are designed to fit photo frames of 7"x5 (Japanese sky) or 8"x10 (Daisies) but I have recently started to make cards out of them and find they work really well.
These two projects are a lot easier to put together than the last one I posted (When we get old) but can still be a little challenging.
I have finished a fourth project based on the famous 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' by Hokusai. I am in two minds wether or not to release this. I assembled it over the last couple of days and it tested my skills to the max! It is perhaps too fiddly, some of the small bits of coloured card are only a couple of mm in diameter, very tricky, and lifting the final cut off the mat was a nightmare! This may just end up on my wall.

So beautiful!!

Can I ask what blade and machine you are cutting with? I don't feel like I ever get that type of detail. I cut with a Black Cat Cougar 13". I feel like I have all the computer stuff down but maybe I am not understanding the mechanics of how to cut (blades, depths, materials, etc...).

Any tips would be appreciated!

Again, these are so beautiful!

You are going to need a good sticky mat. Make sure yours is clean and sticky. Also I find that the detail blade works great. As for force, that will depend on the paper you are cutting. Something like dominicks files really need a paper that isn't really fiberous.

I have cut a lot of Dominic's files (pics in the gallery, masterpieces I think, and on my blog) and they cut beautifully. I have yet to use/need the detail blade with his files, but I do want to try and see if it's even easier! I have used the regular 45 degree blade with the click blade and always make sure the paper well brayered down. His files cut beautifully. I have the Silver Bullet and it breezes through these files.

I cut Dominic's files with my Cougar with no problems. Like Gigi, I usually use the regular blade in the click holder. I typically use Georgia Pacific cardstock, which is fairly heavy and nicely crisp. I cut it with a force of about 115 (this is with my blade barely sticking out of the holder, if your blade is extended more, your force will be less)

As Kim says, any detailed file requires the paper to be very well brayered to a good sticky mat.
