Signcut pauses & not cutting — solved

Two problems — the first, if I copy an image whilst in Inkscape & then go to paste it I only get a placeholder image.
The second & more urgent problem:-
I'm trying to cut an image 15" x 17" using Inkscape & Signcut.
I taped 2 mats tog (the mat supplied with my BC isn't big enough & I needed to achieve a 16" x 24" size) & then created my image in landscape mode.
Sent to Signcut (rotated 90deg) but it's not cutting. Prepares to cut then the carriage zooms straight across to the lefthand side & pauses. There is plenty of space on the lefthand side. Any suggestions?
